Cosmos

West Indies Mahogany, Clear Lacquer Finish, 48″ Diameter, 11″ High

While I was living on St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, a category 5 hurricane named Hugo made land fall on this tiny island in the Caribbean and did extensive damage to everything. Trees were not excepted. 5 years after the hurricane I cut down one of the standing dead mahoganies that lined the roadways. Cosmos is a turning I made from the outer edge of the crown of that tree. From that same crown I cut my coffee table and another turning entitled Monsignor’s Hat. There are so many swirling grain patterns within this circle, my niece commented that it looked like the cosmos.
