Brick laid West Indies Mahogany, Red and Black lacquer 48″diameter, 30″ high
This is a large version of the brick laid bowls I was fascinated by in the early 90’s. Eight pieces of flat stock cut at a 45 degree angle on each end and glued into a circle. Each of the eight pieces were the same length, but as one increased the length the circle diameter increased. Just so, one can glue together a stack of varying diameters to create a rough shape.
The stack is then glued to a faceplate and that is mounted on a lathe. The outside is shaped smooth.
A plug is then inserted into the small end and the plate is cut off the large end. The inside is then finished.
Once it is smooth, finish is applied. I always liked the combination of red and black.
